2025 DataSAI for Neuroscience Summer School
The Chen Institute Data Science and AI (DataSAI) for Neuroscience Summer School was held from June 16–27, 2025 at the Seeley Mudd estate in San Marino. The program was led by Teaching Professor Dr. Justin Bois, who designed the curriculum and taught alongside teaching assistants Adi Nair and Kevin Le.
Over nine intensive days, Caltech neuroscience graduate students and postdoctoral scholars gained hands-on experience with data science techniques for tackling analysis challenges commonly encountered in neuroscience. Core topics included handling neuroscience-specific file formats, a review of probability, generative modeling, and inference via sampling and optimization.
The curriculum also covered a range of widely used statistical and machine learning models, including hierarchical models, mixture models, generalized linear models, factor analysis and principal component analysis (PCA), hidden Markov models, smoothing algorithms, and Gaussian processes.
