Thomas G. Myers Professor of Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Medical Engineering
Changhuei Yang's group advances biophotonics—the imaging and extraction of information from biological targets through the use of light. Yang and professor Viviana Gradinaru are working together on a new noninvasive method of deep-brain stimulation to treat disorders, chronic pain, and disease. Their approach uses only light waves to activate light-sensitive molecules and precisely guide the firing of nerves. Yang and Gradinaru hope to use an optical "time-reversal" trick previously developed by Yang to counteract the scattering of light waves, allowing light beams to be targeted to specific locations within the brain.
