Viviana Gradinaru

Professor of Neuroscience and Biological Engineering
Investigator, Heritage Medical Research Institute
Director, Center for Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience

Viviana Gradinaru's group uses advanced technologies such as optogenetics, CLARITY, physiology, imaging, and behavior to understand and develop therapies for neurological diseases. While still a student and a postdoctoral scholar, she made fundamental contributions to the new area of optogenetics and, with collaborators, created the CLARITY technique now used to map and study intact biological tissue. In 2014, she and her team built on CLARITY with new techniques that enable scientists to see through tissues, organs, and even an entire body using standard optical methods. These techniques offer new insight into the cell-by-cell makeup of organisms—and new hope for novel diagnostic medical applications.Professor of Neuroscience and Biological Engineering, Investigator, Heritage Medical Research Institute; Director, Center for Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience
